UKANDU has provided hope, joy and connection to families navigating a childhood cancer journey for almost four decades. Since 1986, those efforts were primarily realized in the form of an “outrageously fun” week-long summer camp experience called Camp UKANDU. Informed by the experience and lessons learned at this flagship program, UKANDU programming has expanded to include a suite of six total programs that serve families 10 out of 12 months of the year. And yet, with each program launch, families are still asking for l more engagement, support, and connection.

Thus, in 2021 we partnered with OHSU’s Knight Cancer Community Partnership Program to identify gaps in services available to families impacted by a childhood or adolescent cancer diagnosis. After more than 12 months of surveys, focus groups, and interviews we learned a lot. And one thing is incredibly clear - these families are still underserved.

Empowered by our history and success, and motivated by our research, UKANDU is growing again. This next expansion in programming will allow us to do what we do so well – create safe spaces for families to connect in the midst of a harrowing journey – 52 weeks a year.

In the Winter of 2025, UKANDU’s “The LOFT” will open and become our programming hub and headquarters. Located just six minutes from Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and 11 minutes from Randall Children’s Hospital, The LOFT will facilitate hope, joy, community, and connection - all year long. This expansion means new year-round opportunities will be available to families in addition to the existing programs you know and love.

This expansion represents a quantum leap for programs available to families throughout the state of Oregon. We are so excited to partner with other amazing organizations in this critical ecosystem to bring holistic, wrap-around care for these incredibly deserving families.

We are working with a renowned team, including Gensler Architects and Walsh Construction, to bring this space to life and anticipate breaking ground in the coming months.
